How the log estimate works
Upload a photo of the log — ideally the whole stick with something for scale, plus the end grain. lumber.bid reads species, small-end diameter and merchantable length against the reference objects in frame, grades the log the way a sawyer would (veneer ≥22″ clear, Grade 1 ≥16″, down to firewood below 10″), and returns a value band rather than a single number.
A band is the honest answer. Nobody can price a log exactly from a photograph — the things that move a log’s price most are internal soundness, metal, and which buyer needs it, and all three are only fully knowable at inspection. The estimate exists so you know whether you are looking at firewood or at a four-figure walnut stick before anyone drives out — and why good logs sell by sealed bid, where buyers compete instead of naming your price for you.
